Main Street in downtown Little Rock, Arkansas has suffered what most American downtowns have suffered today...urban sprawl. For decades Little Rock's Main Street has suffered severely both economically and socially. Though many attempts have been made to revitalize Main Street, none have been successful. Currently, with the help of the University's Community Design Center, local architecture firms have set out for another chance to revitalize Main Street by converting it into a "Creative Corridor". This corridor will be focused on the fine arts (e.g. dance, theatre, painting, etc.). In conjunction to this revitalization effort, the fourth year architecture class at University of Arkansas was asked to propose a multi-purpose facility that will cater to the arts through specific programs while also allowing for a public gathering space which is lacking in much of downtown Little Rock.

In addition to our proposed design, six will overall will be entered into a competition which will then be judged in the spring 2012. This proposal is currently one of the six entered for the competition. This was a semester long project in a comprehensive studio where structural, mechanical, landscape, and architectural design was all incorporated. This project focuses on the general form of the design within its context to the specific tectonics of the skin.

Defines and creates space

A corner site in architecture is always an opportunity to create something special and I particularly like how this design handles the corner site. The mass and layout of the design site well within the context and seem to hug the adjacent buildings, thereby creating an open courtyard space at ground level. This not only opens and welcomes people to the building but also provides open space.
The look of the building is very simple and clear yet elegant and the horizontal lines of the facade seem to counter the vertical mass of the building.
The main interior layout is also well done as the service functions are set mainly along the back and up against the adjacent buildings while the main circulation and functional spaces are aligned along the curtain wall allowing much light to the interior.
